Is your UVB light the tube one in the hood? If so it needs to be moved over the basking area... with no glass/plastic between it and the turtle...

the basking area looks very close to the top of the tank. your turtle may be able to climb it. they are great escape artists. maybe you should put a border or something to block them

Very cool. What size tank is that and what size PVC did you use for the basking stand? im thinking about using PVC to do the same thing for my tank.

You need to take the gravel out, it's a danger to your turts. And putting a screen top on your tank won't allow a lot of the UVB light through. And make sure and check the box for the light that you bought to make sure it's UVB, most of them are just UVA. If it doesn't say UVB, it doesn't have it. What temp is your basking area? And if you have hard water, there is a water softener that you can get for aqautic animals.

the tank is a 75 gal, the pvc is 1 inch. im goin to a different pet store today, one that knows a bit more about turtles. the basking area is about 82 deg f. water is a steady 79 deg f. im also gonna look for the softener. thanks

I'd double check that lamp. Any lamp that produces UVA/UVB and heat will not fit in there. If the box doesn't actually say UVB on the box, then it's not producing it.

I agree--a combination mercury vapor light will not fit in that fixture. And if it did, it should not be in that fixture. MVB's give off a lot of heat, and should be in a fixture like a dome, which traps less heat. Trapped heat will encourage a MVB to overheat and you could shorten the life of the bulb. (Which is relatively expensive to replace.)

How far away is the basking light from the basking area? I think a MVB would produce a higher temp than 82F at the distance it is.

If you're using a screen as protection, get one with larger holes (like 1/2 inch) to let more UVB rays reach your basking turtle.
