Habitat - Indoor :: Suggestions for removing "film" from aquarium

I have my RES in a very used aquarium now. It was a free upgrade! It took me forever to clean it out (it was full and hadn't been cleaned in several years). Everything cleaned up fine, except on one side of the top of the glass thre is a whitish film that I can't get to come off for anything! I've tried algae scrapers, towels, aquarium cleaning wipes, and it will not budge. Every time I do a water change I try to clean it with no results. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could try? I was thinking maybe vinegar if it's water deposit, but with it already being in use i'm worried about it leaving a residual and getting in his water.

It is ok to wash the tank with a vinegar solution. You just have to rinse THOROUGHLY and allow to air dry. If you can toss the tank outside or in a sun beam to help the evaporation along.

I had some hard water stains on my tank. The only way i could get it off was with a flat razor and some gentle persuasion.

Try razor blades like these:

If you can find a holder for them (it looks like a screwdriver) it would make it so much easier.

i would HIGHLY recommend a holder for the razor blades steve is showing. if you cant find one, be sure and have paper towles on hand. trust me, you will need them.

Hardware stores sell holders for them. I bought some blades that came with them at a hardware store.

Did you try a toothbrush? If it's hard water stains, a toothbrush works great and you don't have to worry about scratching the tank.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will try the razor blades or toothbrush first. Taking the tank outside would be way too much work! I'll let you know how it works. I've been wanting to take pics of his new setup, but the tank looks so "scuzzy" i've been too embarassed to.
