Based on the 1" of shell per 10 gallons of tank guideline, do you have an appropriate tank?

Larger than necessary for my RES, just right for one painted set-up, and a little small for another painted set-up (I'm waiting for labor day sales to see if Tractor Supply Company has what I want). :)

Mine is just right, 5" shell = 50 gallon tank. And I got a nice one that my dad will buy off me for fish once my RES has outgrown it... then I need to find something bigger... and somewhere to put it!

Right now my 7" Spanky is in a 72 gallon bow front, but in exactly 18 days when I move, he'll be going into his new 150 gallon indoor pond :D

Do you live in a big house?... I don't know if I could put a huge tank in my house... as I don't know if it would fit anywhere!

Can turts live outside as long as the water temp is ok? I don't live somewhere sunny though... I live in Northern Ireland :(

Can I get outdoor UVA/UVB lamps? :?

The house I am moving into has 5 bedrooms, so we are giving Spanky his own bedroom. It is a pre formed pond, so we are building a wood frame where there will be spots for sand, rocks etc. It will also have waterfall. It will basically look like an above ground pool with a deck.

With an outdoor pond, the sun acts in place of the special lighting needed for indoor turtles. It is probably best to not have an outdoor pond as the full time living quarters for a turtle if your area goes through the normal seasons (cold winter, hot summer) unless you have had succesful experience with hibernating turtles. That is why I am keeping the pond indoors.

Well I voted for what I will have in a week, a 75 gallon for my two little guys. They are each about 2.25 inches, so would only need a 45 gallon, but got a nice big one that they can grow into a bit. Will probably get a 100 or 150 next year when everyone leaves MSU again and will sell 100-150 gallon tank for like $100-$200!
Reyna - 2.25"
Orion - 2.25"

Were 1.3" and 1.4" when I got them on May 12, 2005

Mine is just right for my 2 turtles... one is 3.5.. the other 4 and I have a 75 gallon tank. Have to wait until I move to do any more changing or adding of another tank. I think I'll just end up separating then and giving them their own space.. but for now, its just right :)

What are winters like in Northern Ireland?

The outdoor UVA/UVB bulb is the sun. :)

Winters are cold, we normally get snow - windy and wet :( Then again, the summers aren't great, we don't get a whole lot of sun, and this summer it has been quite rainy - thats why I was asking about Spanky living outside, I don't think the conditions would be suitable for him - so I might have to do what Stacey is doing and give him his own room! (I will probably have to evict someone first! hehe!

I have a couple of thoughts for a bigger tank that 'might' be suitable. Work in progress so to speak :P

Having 5 turtles sure is fun 8)
The four turtles in one tank add up to be 130 gallons but they are in a 200 gallon tank. And the baby is in a 15 gallon.

27 Turtles. 6 Tortoises.

If I have a 50 gallon tank now, then get another 50 gallon tank, and link them together (was initially thinking with a piece of plumbing pipe - obviously big enough so a full grown RES wouldn't get stuck) would I have a 100 gallon tank or still only a 50 gallon tank x 2?

I was 'thinking' about using the first tank for dedicated swimming and the second tank mostly basking, though have about 1/5 water in it... complicated to explain I think... something different though?

(It would be an 'L' shape btw)
