Habitat - Indoor :: forbiden DIY basking pot materials?

hi to all...

i wonder if some of you had succeded in making DIY basking pot and your turtle seems happy about it...what is/are the material/s that you use beside pvc or plexiglass?

is there any experiences about specific material we cannot use and why we can't use the material mentioned?

i myself have tried using corc sheet...but it was too slipery

then i use pvc mat (that looks like noodles) but it seems to release toxic in water...it make the glass misty

i consider using carpet...but i haven't set my mind what kind of carpet

what about you guys....

I used MDF (Medium density Fiber Board) to construct mine, I sealed it then glued down some cupboard liner so protect it even more from moisture. Then I glued down speaker carpeting, very soft and low pile carpet. Then I have a plastic ramp going down into the water so Rexi can get up.

If you're making an in-tank basking spot, cork bark works well if you can find it. Get a piece about as wide as your tank and just wedge it in there, it floats so you just have to make it so that it's stable. Be careful using wood, some wood is treated with chemicals that can leach out into the water.

Your post is a little confusing, are you attempting to make an in-tank or above-tank basking area? I think most people have good success using plexiglass and rocks or tiles glued to it. Most wood will warp eventually, possibly mold. It's probably best to stick with plexiglass. It's easy to work with and inexpensive.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Eggcrate. Wonderful, magical eggcrate!
Ok, so apparenlty I have an eggcrate obsession, but both my RES have eggcrate basking platforms. It works really well because it gives them good grip for climbing up and down, and since there's more holes than support, their plastron dries off almost as quickly as their carapace.
It's easy to work with, you can cut it to any size with wire clippers. It also silicons very nicely! It's 100% waterproof, so it can spend YEARS in the water (Like Ralph's has). And, with a little ingenuity, you can make it an in-tank OR out-of-tank basking area.

co-as -- I have posted this before: my turtles ate enough carpet to stop them up and I had to extract it out of their rectum. Most turtles will eat most anything. Be careful!!

what kind of glue safe enough for animal?

can we use power glue to make basking pot from plastic like eggcrate?

will it poison the water?

Aquarium safe silicone is the best obviously I did most of my assembly with regular old contact cement to hold down the carpet and aquarium silicone for the parts that come into contact with the water.

I used aquarium silicone for the eggcrate. It holds very well. You want to make sure any type of glue you use is non-toxic and water safe. That's why most people go with the aquarium silicone.
