You buy the bubble stone or stick and then you have to buy that airline hose and an airpump. Air gets pumped through the little holes and makse bubbles.
Bubbles can help to circulate the water in the tank, and they're good for oxygenating the water which helps support the biological filter. Some turtles like to play in the bubbles too. Tetra Whisper air pumps are great, they're inexpensive and very quiet.

I got a little air disk for my tank and the turtle seems to like it. I got it mostly for the fish that are in the tank. I have a whisper air pump and it doesn't make any noise at all. The tubing and whatnot is really cheap too, especially from Big Al's.
Plus it's pretty! When I first set it up, I had covered it in the rocks that are in the tank. It looked really nice, all the bubbles coming up from between the rocks. Then my turtle decided it needed some rearranging. Everything is all over the tank now, and she refuses to leave the air stone on the bottom of the tank. She flips it up so she can hide under it, haha.
Haha Sgt. Pepper- Nyx does that too! I am constantly flipping it back over and hooking the hose to a suction cup and she just goes down there and flips it right back over. Silly turtles.
