Habitat - Indoor :: Algae in water...

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

My boyfriend's turtle tank has very persistent algae problems. Before we moved his baby turtle from his 10 gallon tank to his new home (30 gallons) his 10 gallon tank would constantly be going green. We figured after the move, with better filtration, we wouldn't see this issue again. Turns out the water is slowly but surely turning green again. His tank isn't in front of or in line of a window, so we really don't know what the problem is.

Any suggestions guys? I have had my turtle since November and have never had an algae issue.

Thanks :)

Algae grows in the presence of light and nutrients in the water. Nutrients for algae and other plants can come from left over food or turtle/fish waste.

Does left over turtle or fish food stay in the water? If so, feeding the turtle in a separate tank or bowl will help, as would netting out any uneaten food as soon as mealtime is over.

If a tank is too small for the size of a turtle, or if the filter isn't strong enough, then waste can build up. Or, it may simply be that the water should be changed more often. Does your boyfriend test water quality (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate)? If there is a buildup of waste it should show up in tests of water quality.

Thanks Spotsmama, I didn't know that about algae, I thought it was from to much light or something.

I am guessing it must be not enough water changes. The tank size and filters are adequate, I made sure of that. He probably thinks because he has a good set up means he doesn't have to change the water as often. He makes fun of me for my obsession over a very very spotless turtle tank. Can't wait to tell him what his issue is

if that's NOT the issue, there is something called "No More Algae" that fixed my algae problem completely, but it does make the water a bit cloudy.
