Habitat - Indoor :: What happen if the water volume is not enough?

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Wed Jul 16, 2008 4:05 am   What happen if the water volume is not enough?

I keep my turtle in a plastic container, I don't have tank.

What will happen if the turtle has no room for swimming? but I let her swim at my bathtub (or something like that) once a week.

Your turtle will be very unhappy! Turtles are designed to swim and explore, and if they don't get the stimulation they need it will lead to a sad little turtle. The lack of exercize isn't good for them either. If there's two turtles together, a too small tank usually leads to agression and injury. If you can't afford a tank, look into a rubbermaid stock tank. They're big black rubber bins designed to hold water or feed for livestock, and they're a lot cheaper than a glass aquarium.

A turtle needs water to swim in, that is their natural habitat. To keep them in a container with no swimming room at all...well...sorry to be harsh, but that is just animal cruelty to me.

The rule is 10 gallons per inch of turtle and since they grow to the 10-12 inch range, then long term you are looking at 100+ gallon tank. If that is not an option at this time than look for something in the 50 + gallon range. The are aquatic creatures and need water and room to swim around in. You can find deals on craigslist or just look in the paper or post an add of what you are looking for.

IF you are young and don't have that much cash where are two things you can do . As stated before Rubbermade pins. Not even the big blacks ones . Are a 10 buck wall-mart 10 gal. Ten Gal will be ok until you save up and get him a bigger one if he is same now.

I have to disagree with joeybsmooth's statement. Yes, rubbermaid containers from Walmart are perfectly fine for short-term housing. However, don't just buy a 10 gallon on. At least look into a 50 gallon one if possible. They don't cost much at Walmart, so go pick one of those up. The only thing you have to watch for is that since the rubbermaid containers are intended for temporary housing only and aren't intended to store large amounts of water, the side needs to be inspected daily to ensure you have no leaks or cracks.

Look on Craigslist for a deal on a glass aquarium.

I just say 10 because the OP seems like he would not have he cash for the 50 , and even a 10 is better than what he has, and all parents want let people get a Rubbermaid.

( if you are not in that situations sorry OP)

Daniel>>I don't how much gallon could be put inside the container, coz we don't count it in gallon...the volume is 25x35x40cm.

I don't fill it full coz I'm afraid she could jump out of it.

Octpus>> 1 thing I know for sure is that...my turtle isn't sad at all...she is very cheerfull, even when I took her to a vet for checking her unnatural feces, the vet said...she doesn't look ill at all, so energetic for a turtle who have liquid feces.

Oh wow, there's barely enough room for her to turn around in there, let alone swim. I don't want to be rude but that's waaay too small! You really need to figure out a larger enclosure for her. There are other options than an expensive glass tank, as we have all mentioned here. Even a kiddie pool would be better than that small box.

I don't understand how you can have money to go to the vet but not to buy your turtle a proper home. Get an extra large storage container at least! That is really mean and cruel to keep your turtle like that.

No-oz -- You need a larger tank with filter, heater, basking area with uvb, etc. Your turtle species came from that environment and need it to survive. From the looks of your turtle you need at least a 55 gallon. Good Luck!

hey. 55 gallons would be good. and they run for about 100 +.
if that is a little pricey, you might want to consider getting one of these

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... id=3512888

in my opinion its probably better than a rubbermaid because its sturdier and actually made to contain water (when the ice melts)

its 120 quarts which is 50 gallons. (4 quarts per gallon)

and its half the cost of a 55 gallon aquarium.

melted>> I have to take her to vet...it's hard on money, I can tell you taht!! But I have to!! she wasn't right at that time.

I'm thinking of buying her a bigger container...tank is still to expensive...If I live in my own house, I would build her an outdoor pool.

Basically, the container she had right now is about twice her length in wide and trice in length.
