Habitat - Indoor :: Calcium or hard water deposit

I bought a tank off craigslist and it has alot of hard water deposits around where the water level sat. I have take most off with a razor, most of the caked on stuff, But now there is like this film.

Now before most of you say, "Vinegar and water" I have tried that. Along with CLR and that is specifically made to get rid of Calcium, Lime, and Rust.

To no avail, the cloudiness is still there and the hard water stains as well...

What should i do?

water and vinegar. haha. really though it sounds like youve already done all the stuff that i would have tried. thats surprising that CLR didnt even take care of it. you might want to try something like a shower cleaning spray or something. im not too sure though.

I know exactly what you are talking about, I just don't know how to get rid of it. My moms 55 gal glass has it, as well as the 30 gal tank we have sitting around. I have not noticed it at all with my acrylic 55 gal. You can see the film now, but when you fill it up, it won't be very noticeable, if at all.

But I'm going to watch this thread, I'd be interested to see if anything works.

Something that comes to mind though is that newer product made by scrubbing bubbles that is like a soap scum remover and it has that special scrub brush that comes with it... I don't know if that would take care of the film though.

I know, its so weird... I thought for sure that CLR would work... especially after it burnt my leg when it dripped on it and i didn't notice untill it burned me.


I just tried lacquer thinner, paint thinner, mineral spirits, and brake cleaner.
none of it worked.

Lol its kind of funny that all these crazy harmful chemicals are not even touching that stuff..

I think i have lost enough brain cells for today.

There is this stuff made by API that is made for cleaning a tank. You just spray it, let it sit and then wipe then rinse. It actually works. I have used it on my tanks before. Just make sure to rinse REALLY well before you set it back up. Remember to shake the bottle or it won't work!

If all else fails, it's possible the surface of the glass itself is damaged or scratched.

Yeah i have thought of that, but it is just too perfect where it is located for it to be damaged.

But your right, if nothing seems to be working, it could just be damaged.

I used Lime away. Got about 90% of it off
