Are you talking about the crud that settles on top of the sand or the sand layer itself?
If its the crud then a python or vacuum helps a lot. I think I have also mentioned that I got the magnum for water polish. When I have it running I literally have a big wooden spoon that I use to dust up a current at the bottom of the tank. This pushes the wastes on top of the sand to the intake of the filter. It is not perfect but it helps.
Spotsmama was talking about a powered vacuum in another post. That might be an idea as well. Been thinking of just hooking up a vacuum tube to the magnum itself. That would be easier than my spoon ritual!
