Habitat - Indoor :: Treating water or what filter to prevent future buildup?

Is there any kind of filter or something I can do to the water to keep that darn calcium or white stuff from building up around the water line?

For my new setup I've got a Fluval Plus 4 & Tetra Reptofilter waterfall.

The white line is hard water deposit from your water. So unless you use a water softener, it won't go away.

I plan on an above-tank basking area and filling the water all the way up to the plastic trim around the top of the tank. The water line would then be out of sight.

I don't know if this would work on smaller tanks, as the distance from the trim to the ridge where the basking area rests needs to be high enough to still allow breathing room for the turtle.
