Habitat - Indoor :: Algae Remover/Reducer?

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Mon Aug 18, 2008 2:25 pm   Algae Remover/Reducer?

So Wal-Mart sells a few products some liquid, some fizzing tablets, to reduced the algae in the tank. I'm worried about trying it because some of them say not to use in tanks with specific animals such as crabs, or snails, but none mention turtles what so ever. So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or if anyone has tried a similar product.

The algae in my tank is really bad, like it grows on any flat surface and starts getting thick. The bottom, the sides, it doesn't matter, if its a flat enough area, algae starts to coat it within days of completely draining and cleaning out the tank. Any ideas as to what may cause this rapid algae growth?

Thanks.

You can also add some live plants like java moss. They will eat up the nitrates that the algae thrive on.

Yeah the tank is in front of a window (makes draining it real easy haha), but the backyard is full of trees, and the window has blinds AND curtains over it.....

Could it also have something to do with not having an adequate filter? I know my filter isn't good enough, and I plan to get a canister filter soon. Every time I try to save up money for one, something comes up. School's getting ready to start back and when I get my student loan I'm going to run out and get a canister filter before something comes along to take my money haha.

Having it in front of a window can cause excess algae. Even if the window is all covered up all the time. The temperature changes easier by the window and that can affect your tank. So can insufficient filtration.

Well I'm going to fix the filtration problem soon, but there is nothing I can do about the window position, it's my only choice. Hopefully the strong new filter coupled with the algae liquid will curb the problem.
