Before I got my stand, I had my tank on a piece of 1/2" plywood on a tile floor. Unless you have a concrete floor, I would use a piece of 1" MDF under the tank. Thinner materials will not distribute the weight as much as you might think, and ultimately the tank would just be resting on the floor joists.
I placed a 75 gallon right on the tile before and cracked the bottom glass. Luckily, I was able to fix it with marine grade silicone and it's been up for a month now with no leaks.
