Habitat - Indoor :: Zilla Aquatic turtle kit

I was looking to buy one of these for my newly acquired RES named Squirt. He's about 4 years old and is approx 2 inches long, not very big :/.

Anyone here have opinions on this kit?

its not worth it. none of the things in the kit have the quality needed to care for a turtle. 4 years old and 2 inches is very small for that age. the rule of thumb is ATLEAST 10 gallons of water for every inch of turtle. More is always better. keep in mind that a properly cared for turtle can grow pretty fast so buy the biggest tank you can. read through the main site a few times. it will tell you pretty much everything you need to know about caring for your new turtle.

Correction, you could probably use the 2 dome lights from it, and that's about it... haha.

DON'T buy that kit, it is a complete waste of money. You will need a minimum 75 gallon tank when your turtle is full grown, depending on how big he gets (And that is assuming you are positive he is a male. Females get bigger and need bigger tanks.)

Also - the filter in that tank is totally inadequate for a turtle. You need something more powerful. And I'm not really sure what the bulbs are that they give you for the 2 dome lights, but you need one heat lamp and one UVB light.

Try looking on Craigslist for a tank, you can find some great deals on there.

generally, things that say "turtle ______" are not nearly what you think.

although some may have benefits, most dont. this forum and all of its members will be your best bet on help!

I wouldn't waste your time on the 'Turtle' setup as it doesn't look like it's worth the $$$. Oftentimes even though they do say 'turtle' setup or whatever they are lacking in the basics, such as correct size for the turtle etc. Remember 10gallons per inch of shell. My Zeke came with a 20 gallon 'Turtle Tank" that has a hole in the side for the filter...taking away precious water space, he had maybe 10-12 gallons to swim in....he's in a MUCH bigger tank now.

What were they thinking when they made them?!?!?! I know that the people who specialize in turtle products have got to know the correct way to take care of a turtle.

you could plonk a corn snake in there. or a tarantula, maybe a hermit crab or an african land snail

mind you that would still render the lights useless in most cases.

Also - - it doesn't show it in the picture but they have that kit at the petco near my house and it has a panel cut out of the side of the tank so the Hang over filter is closer - - (idk if they have different kits) But this means that you cant ever fill up the tank any higher then the hole and you would have a problem upgrading the filter if you ever wanted to. These tanks are not actual "AQUARIUMS" and are not sealed as well as a normal aquarium either..

As for the filter that it comes with - - that is the same filter that came with my BETA when i bought him (just to give you an idea as to how it wouldnt be great for a turtle who poops alot more then my Beta)
