Habitat - Indoor :: is this ok? about basking

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sun Oct 12, 2008 11:09 pm   is this ok? about basking

my turtle mainly basks at night, but i also keep the UVB on during the day, but i can't turn it off at night because she mainly likes sleeping on the basking platform while basking.

so my question is... if were supposed to keep the UVB bulb on at least 8-10 hours a day, then is it ok for me to have my UVB off during the day & on during the night since she basks mostly at night?

I'm not sure what's wrong or right technically

I will say this...

I have my lights on a timer to come on when the sun comes up and off when it goes down and my turtles seem to do ok..
They bask a lot during the day

I was under the impression that you should make it like living in the wild

yea i was planning on doing that, but crush bask/sleeps on the basking platform at night so i leave it on. i'm not sure if i should get her used to the day/night thing by keeping it on during the day & leaving it off @ night.

Try raising the temp on the basking platform a couple of degrees. Some turtles like it warmer. It would be best to encourage your turtle to adjust to a normal day/night cycle. If the UVB is on all night, then she's never having a dark time like she should.

yea i'll try turning it off at night so that she realizes that she HAS to bask during the day. thank you

I keep mine on for 12 hours a day, so it's even, but now that Fall is here I need to set it to about 9-10 hours a day.

It's a cheap pin one from Walmart. It's kind of confusing to use at first. You can get a digitalone for a little more. They are in the hardware section near the power strips.
