Habitat - Indoor :: Sandy beach

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Yesterday I decided too build a sandy beach basking area for Sassamo. After about 2 hours and several changes it's done! I haven't seen her go to the top part yet, she does like the wet platform, her body is covered and her head is out.
The bin is a sterilite bin, the door was cut out and the edges rounded, there are several draining holes, and about 2inches of sand.
I started out using the old turtle dock as part of the ramp, but she's too big too get between it. I put the sand filled bin ontop of 2 old rabbit cage panels wired together. The "fence" is egg crate on the ends and NIC(neat Idea cubes, which are designed to be storage but many people build rabbit, guinea pig and chinchilla cages out of them.) panels.
I didn't put a lid on top, the fence is 13inches high so I hope we don't have a climber.
Here's Some pics:
This is the before I changed the ramp:

The fence, finished here. You can only see 1 light but the both are there.

And the girl with beach front property :)

I hope she uses it and loves it :)

that's awesome!

i have a few questions :P. your first pic looks different from your second. did you change the 1st platform (the turtle dock) to an egg crate? what did you use to support the sandy beach basking area? what kind of sand did you use?

Yes I took the old turtle dock off there was not enough space for Sassamo too climb up(she's 6inches). So I used a piece off eggcrate, which is suctioned cupped under the water about 3inches.
I re-built my rabbits cage last week so I used a couple pieces of it too make the support. So it's wire panels ziptied together. I wouldn't use wood or anything flimsy(ie eggcrate), 1/2 a bag of sand is 25 lbs. You could get a piece of the wire shelving sold in hardware stores cut too fit your tank. I made the suppot over lap about an inch on each side.
I used play sand from home depot. Any store bought sand would work fine(play sand, sand for concrete ect). Basically I look at it is if it is safe for kids it's safe for most pets. I use the same sand for my fish tank and hermit crabs.
