Any pics would definately help with the diagnosis but it sounds like mineral deposit to me..

You could try that, use an old worn toothbrush.. It could even be that he's starting to shed and some moisture has got under the loose scutes. To be 100% sure though you really need to try and get some pictures. Has he a basking area with correct temps and a uvb source?

I know exactly what you're talking about. My 5" male RES has the same thing, only visible in the water. My theory is that it's air trapped under the scutes, causing the air bubbles to appear gold in color when the light is filtered through the scute.

THE PIC IS NOT THAT GOOD AT SHOWING THE GOLD DOT BUT ON THIS ONE YOU CAN SEE IT ON THE TOP RIGHT HAND "CORNER" OF HER SHELL RIGHT BY HER HEAD AND THEY GO ALL AROUND

I personally think that its just trapped air like was discussed before. Make sure he has a place to completely dry out and bask with a good uvb source and any shell problems should be avoided. Oh also try and add a cuttlefish bone so they can nibble on it which will provide him with plenty of calcium for his shell.

Gold spots, if they are only visible under watter, are trapped air under scutes that are soon to be shed.

And cuttlebone is definitely a good idea :)
