Alright soak it in water for a minute or so to get it fully saturated, then just set it in the freezer until it freezes.

Then after that, cut the sponge to the length you need. Probably half of the sponge. Take your knife and make an X in the end of the foam so it will slide over the strainer. Then carve it down to make it into a cylindrical shape. Probably 1/4-1/2" thick around the intake. Just use a steak knife or something with a little serration to the blade.

You freeze it so that when you go to carve and cut the foam, it will be easy.

And the sand you got is perfectly fine.

cut an x in it huh? that will make it a tight fit right? do i cut ALL the way thru or make it like a glove?

this goes on the outside of the inlet pipe strainer, but how will the filter collect anything if this thing is covering it?

Yeah, leave a little space in the bottom, but you can cut pretty much all the way through.

The majority of the waste will collect on the prefilter. Hence why you need to take it off weekly and clean it out so it won't affect your filters efficiency. For this reason, most people don't use pre filters, but just make sure there intake is at least 4" off the top of the sand bed.

Wet the foam and throw it in the freezer today so it'll be easy to do. ;)
