How bad is it for a tank to be about 3 inches too wide, but not in depth?

that sounds like a 50 gallon tank, that's more than adequate!

assuming your turtle is about 6 inches or less in shell length.
50 gallons is what I have for my turtles

Tanks are designed to be fully supported underneath. Putting on a base too small will create 2 stress points it was not designed for. This means there is potential for it cracking and a lot of water escaping.

You may get away with it, but I personally would not contemplate it.

Yeah, i wouldn't take the risk of 50 gallons spilling on the floor.

if you must use it with that stand make sure to support the tank with plywood between the tank and the stand it will create an even base i know a few members on the forum have done it in the past with great success

I would probably use 3/4 inch thick plywood if you have to go this route. Tanks basically have all their weight at the outside edges. Also make sure you secure the plywood to the top of your existing tank stand.

I did the 3/4" plywood route to take a well built 10gal stand and use it for a 35 gal.
