hi - i guess i'm a "newbie" here but i have owned 2 red eared sliders for about 2 years.

i just wanted people who use the Reptisun 5.0 compact UVB bulbs to know these bulbs lasts for a year (in case some people didn't) - i had emailed a ZooMed directly and this is their response:

"Thank you for contacting us. We have recently completed more testing and have found that these bulbs still product adequate UVB/ UVA even after 12 months of use. For this reason, we have changed our recommendations to replacing the bulb once yearly. Please let me know if you have any further questions."

So they didn't create a new bulb, just did further testing? I'm surprised they didn't have this data available before since measuring and testing UVB strength is quite established.

Well, how are you only supposed to only replace them once a year if the lightbulb goes out after only 7, maybe 8 months? LOL! Mine went out yesterday.

i was hoping they would last a year or so...!

i thought it might be like those energy efficient bulbs that last a while longer but after a year would no longer emit UVB .. in which case i would just use the bulbs as regular household lamps!

well what got me to ask Zoo Med was because I noticed on the package it said to replace once a year - but all the posts kept saying to replace once every 6 - 8 months or so. I was confused and i decided to contact Zoo Med and that was the response- i was glad to hear it but not glad to hear it might burn out 7 or 8 months later!

But m 25 watt UVB was on a 60 watt lamp..... I bet if you put it on, say a 30 watt lamp, it would last about a year or longer.

That's the reply I received from the peeps at Zoo Med. They even go as far to say they emit "UVB and UVA even AFTER 12 months of USE."

if the bulb lasts that long. I THINK it has like a 6 month Warranty.
