The difficult part is that turtles like fish, any fish.

To keep the tank clean, fish is not the answer. If you want to try, you can try
keeping a pleco. Those large turtles should be safe enough should they try to eat
a pleco. Some people say pleco produces more waste than the algae they eat.

So, to keep your tank clean, you need a good filter and good location of the tank.
I guess "dinner plate size" is rather large. In that case, two turtles that size need
much bigger tank than a 40 gallon. A good filter, from what I've read here, is one
that can cycle the amount of water in the tank five times an hour. Good location is
one that is not in direct sunlight, because sunlight grows algae fast.

I hope this helps.

t-turt-keep -- If your two turtles are about 6inches the 40 gallon tank is not larege enough. They need at least a 124 gallon tank with at least a 600 gph filter. You must have to change the water often to keep it clean. m.

Before you worry about finding supplemental filtering, such as fish, you need to worry about getting the correct habitat for your turtles. You need a large tank and large filter. The more water you have the more dissolved all contaminants become, and the easier time your filter will have with filtering.

You need to crawl before you walk. Kemul was simply trying to give you pointers to find a place to start. Getting fish (which are generally fatty) is something to worry about once you have an established tank of a good size.
