I haven't been able to figure this out but what determines the gph when making your DIY filter? Does size matter in this case?

I assumed the GPH from the written specification on the powerhead.

Size of the canister determines the holding time of the water before the water
flows back into the tank. Also, it obviously determines the amount of media you
can have in your filter. For me, the more bio media the better.

The GPH is determined by the size of the pump. You want to buy one that will cycle your tank 5 times x hour.
Example.
If you have a 75 gallon tank, you will need a pump that pumps 75 x 5 = 375 GPH (gallons per hour)
