Habitat - Indoor :: Need help please!

I have recently moved my 2 RES into a 55 gallon tank. They are still fairly small. One is 3 1/2in the other 4. Their water is becoming very dirty and they are starting to smell. I was wondering what filter or filters I need for their tank, any other info will be tons of help thanks!

the largest canister filter you can afford is the best bet. I can recommend Fluval canisters (I've used the 405 and I now use the FX5). I've also used the Magnum 350, which isn't the best but isn't bad either.

I've also heard Eheim filters are the mercedes-benz of canister filters. I wonder if that means they drive like a boat?
