So I just installed my new filter today, and I forgot to smear goo from my old filter into the media of the new filter. Can I just run my old filter and new filter together to keep the nitrogen cycle bacteria in the tank? If so, for how long should I run my old filter before taking it out?

I would just let it recycle and probably just dump some of the old bio meada into the tank itself and let it foat around for about a week.

Many people run their old filter for about 2 weeks so their new filter can get seeded.
Or you can take out the biomedia from the old filter and put it in the new one.
