Does anybody use a nightlight for their turtles?just curious i was thinking about getting one.

I read somewhere that 'black bulbs' tend to get over heated and blow out alot. Im not sure about the infrared bulbs though, i dont think alot of people use them.

well they have the blue one which i guess is called the black light and then they also have a red one.

but probably i shouldnt get one?

I dont use them for any of the turts. As long as the air temp is warm enough it's not needed

well i live in washington and in my house it usually isnt all that warm at night its pretty cold but i dont have a temp gauge above water in the tank so ill just check tonight then.

The night time heat bulbs are usually beneficial for tropical animals where the night time temps rarely drop much from the day time temps. The temperate zone that RES are found normally experiences night time temp drops of 10 to 20 degrees.

As long as you have a heater for the water, you don't have to worry about the ambient temp of your house.

When I was younger & living w/my parents, my mom at some point was going thru menopause. She was constantly turning the heat down to 62 degrees (never higher than 65 in the middle of our Michigan winter!!!). I was constantly FREEZING! But Sheba's water temp never went below 78 degrees because I had a good water heater in there & she was always fine.

So you don't have to worry about it. Most RES's sleep IN the water anyway.

If you find that the temp gets too cool, cover a good portion of the tank at night. It will help trap some of the heat in.
