Habitat - Indoor :: Quick Heater question...

I have a stealth heater...not the glass one. Which I placed vertically on the side of the tank. How do I know the heater is working? If I touch, it's not supposed to be warm is it? Although I think it's a little warm towards the end of the heater. And now my turtle seems to be close to, and touching the bottom of the heater as well. I assume it's working? Thanks!

those stealth heaters are just that... stealth. unless there's a drop in temp in ur turtle water then i don't know if there is another way tell. i have one of hose buggers too and wondered the same thing.

Some models have a litte red light towards the top that show they are working. My heaters do get warm towards the bottom. I have 3 of the heaters in several different tanks. I rely on my therometers. For my turtle tank I got the floating kind encased in plastic for ponds (found it at Petsmart) because my big turtle kept biting the glass ones for fish tanks. Hope this helps.

It would also be a good idea to regularly check the temps, to make sure things are working properly

Of of the drawbacks of those heaters (no indicator light). Checking the temp of the water with a good thermometer to see if it's what the heater is set at is what you have to do. The stealth's I've used would also form little bubbles on them when they were heating the water, indicating that something was going on with them.
