Feeding and Nutrition :: EEWWWWW! Hornworms

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

That was very messy. I gave each of the kids a nice juicy hornworm, and I have never seen such a disgusting mess. It was like a firecracker went off in the worms, and there were horrible bits of gore everywhere! I will certainly give them bigger worms in a different container from now on. Urck!

Thanks for the warning! Spot will stick with food that doesn't explode - like pellets, shrimp, anacharis....

Seriously. I am not usually to sqeemish, but they made the water cloudy! I thought they might be a little big for the turtles, but they made quick but MESSY work of them. I think I may just go with earthworms. They don't explode.

Were those anything like the huge tomato hornworms that can gnaw down a large tomato plant in an hour? (at least that's the picture I have in my head) Huge, green things two inches in diameter and six inches long? Just wondering...

Yeah the hornworms are nasty. I always have to cut them in half before feeding so they don't burrow down in the dirt and cocoon. It's happened more than once and trying to catch an enormous (size of a BAT) hornworm moth in your apartment is no fun!
