If there's 30-40 of them then get them a ten gallon and a lot of foliage to hide in. Even if they are in their own tank they don't feel safe. You only need enough to cover a corner of the tank. They eat normal fish flakes, just make sure and mush it up between your fingers before putting in the tank. They won't need that much. They grow really quickly too. Once they are about half the size of normal adults they will start to get their colors. The males will have bright colors and bigger tales. The females will generally be duller. All my females are half black half white. Once they start showing their colors, separate the males from the females or you will very soon have more babies. As long as the temp is between 70-80 you should be fine.
