Feeding and Nutrition :: Fish are friends not food! (According to my turtle)

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Thu Jan 03, 2008 3:31 am   Fish are friends not food! (According to my turtle)

My turtle is like any other healthy turtle... He begs for food, and is super excited at feeding time. The only thing that baffles me is that he could really care less about his fish. They are like buddies.

He chased his first feeder fish for about a day, and decided he would rather do other things, like play in the bubbles or plants.

Im not actually concerned but I was wondering if your turtles developed prey drive or if Rossco is just really laid back.

Any stories or comments are welcome :D

Thanks!

My turtles love to chase the fish when they are new. But like your turtle, they become friends from then on. The only fish that they chase untill they get are rosy red minnows. Those are the only kinds they can actually catch :D

Ci-ever -- A turtle is like any other animal; he takes the path of least resistance. “Why should I chase the fish around if I am not hungry and I am going to be fed today” I can guarantee, that if you don’t feed them the friendliness will go away. If you can stand it, don’t feed them for several days and see what happens. Gulp! Gulp!

Haha thanks for the replies guys.

I think im alright with letting the fish share the tank.... perhaps I will try Rosey Reds though. Right now I have some neons in there. I don't think I mind to terribly, as I really do love feeding him his pellets.

Just wait one day a fish will slow down or get sick and your turt will eat him, they always do.

I agree with erinemcgreevy my turtle hardly eats fish more or less they look like friends and share the tank but ever so often a fish will disappear hey at least he moderates his treats himself

Hehe your turtle might be like mine then! One of my turtles I used to own lived with his fish for a year. ( in fact, they are still living with him) He has never made any attempt to eat them, although any bug, spider that goes into his tank is messily torn open and eaten.

My former turtle was an Eastern River Cooter which aren't as predatory as RES so I don't really know :D

I have 3 fish and 1 pleco. She only chased the fish the first now, but now, when Im feeding my turtle, the fish come and try to get some food away from her, and she doesnt do anything. She scared of the pleco, she had curiosity the first day and tried to get closed to look at it, but as soon as the pleco moved she got really scared. So she´s just there sharing the tank with the fish...
