Since Im not big on seeing animals tortured does my turt need live prey?

Turtles don't need live fish at all, it's really just an occasional snack for them and a chance to get some exercise. If you don't want to feed anything live, it's absolutely fine, your turtle will be no less happy without feeder fish.

I got a giggle out of this. It reminds me of when I went into a local pet store looking for feeder mice. They won't even sell pet mice because they're afraid they'll be used as feeders, yet they sell feeder fish, crickets, worms..... I don't see a difference between these types of live prey...

I wouldn't worry about the torture aspect of live fish. My little turtle, who is about three inches, can swallow a fish whole and half the time he eats them when I'm not around.

I don't feed live fish---they're really not as necessary for a turtle's diet as people seem to think. My turtles do occasionally get live crickets and worms (especially earthworms) and they always have a few snails in their tanks, which, combined with other things they get in their diets, seems to be fine for them.
