Feeding and Nutrition :: new turtle

I juat got a new baby painted turtle... he is the size of a quarter and i was just wondering what i am supposed to feed him... the guy that i got him from ( an animal "expert", he has a ton of wild animals that he rehabilitates) was feeding him grass... and that is what i have in his tank right now... i just dunno what else i should be feeding it... i have a year old turtle that i feed the regular pellets but he baby is way to small to eat those... so help would be nice... thanks!!

Grass, i wouldnt think so.

You should be feeding pellets, veggies (lettuce, carrots, and others), fruits, maybe some fish at times.
Did you look through the nutrition on the website? Look at some of that.


Also, how big is your tank?
What do you have in there right now?
And what kind of painted turtle do you have? (western, eastern, southern, or midland)? Can you post a picture?

They have turtle pellets for baby turtles. I think reptomin makes them. If you can't find those, then you can break up the bigger pellets so it's easier for the baby to eat.

you need to crush up some pellets if you already have big ones. i put my pellets in a plastic baggie and took a hammer to it. so my baby is ready for some food when i get him in the morning. i ordered a baby RES thats arriving in the morning.

sorry i don't have the internet anymore at my house... i was gonna crush up pellets for him but i didn't know if that was ok where he is so young...

i'm not sure what kind of painted it is... it has a red belly and the red ring around the outside edge of the shell... i think its an eastern painted tho... i think that that is what the guy said...

i can't post any pictures at the moment cause i don't have a camera and i changed phone companies and my internet on my phone isn't working so i can't send the pictures to my email anymore... but as soon as i find a camera, or my phone starts working again i will have pictures up!

It does sound like an eastern painted. Just keep it away from the RES. It is small enough that the RES might become very aggressive with it. It will also need a large tank like the RES.

I know it will need a big tank... i plan on getting a different tank for the RES when i get the money... and i will put the painted in the tank that the RES is in now...

I would feed him the same pellets you feed your other turtle but marinade them in tuna fish water. I did this with my hatchling that came from the wild and he took to it pretty quickly. Good luck and keep us posted!

Just pretty much do the samme thing for it you would do for a RES.
