Feeding and Nutrition :: Too much cuttlebone...Seriously.

My boys eat cuttle bone like that too. I've often wondered how good it is for them in such large amounts... So I cut them back a bit.

I think you can overfeed on anything. That's more in reference to a balanced-varied diet.

Anyway, my female RES will eat non-stop if given the opportunity. It's almost unbelievable and I've never seen any animal have an appetite like hers. So I need to be careful in whatever she eats.

I've tried cuttlebone so many times. My turtles are hungry, but they won't touch the cuttlebone, regardless of how hungry they are! Isn't it interesting how turtles have such personalities that are so different! My two have been housed together since they were hatchlings. I feed them separately to avoid fighting. They each eat different foods and different amounts of food. They are also each growing at different rates. They are healthy and that's all that matters.

I am glad I saw this topic. My female RES eats cuttlebone like crazy. Now I have to cut back. I had stopped giving it to her and started back again. Well once a wk will have to do.

And the UVB light is only about 3 weeks old. Repti glo 5.0 26 watt.

Why go for the 5.0 when the 10.0 is almost exactly the same price?

Some people say that the 10.0 is to much, but that's what I have and haven't had a problem with it ever.

Well,I think you can give them to much calcium.So,I'd put smaller pieces in there and not as often,maybe everyday or every other day.Of course,since they're getting bigger,they're gonna need calcium,but it loks lik they've already had alot!So,I'd reduce the amout to smaller pieces and maybe feed it to them every other day.

Because 10.0 isn't "Better". Just stronger, and can/has caused eye problems. It's not something I would want to deal with.

also, I limited his cuttlebone to a piece every 2-3 days now.
