Feeding and Nutrition :: Feeder Fish

thanks everybody for sharing their experiences with feeder fish... my turtle's hunting skills weren't as great as I thought . one of the feeder fish ended up getting his tailed injured (my turtle's doing- no doubt about it) but didn't finish him . this made me feel really terrible! the fish still swims fine and everything so I'm giving the 2 feeder fish away to a friend that will take care of them. I'm such a wuss!

Squirt wont/can't eat rosey reds. I think cause they're too small and fast for her to catch. But she'll tear up a smaller comet with no problem.

hmm very interesting! I was wondering how everybody fed their turtles rosey reds when I realized how quick they were. I think I'm done giving him live food tho

I got three fish to help clean up the food waste and poo that my turtles produce about three months ago.
After the first week, the biggest one just totally dissapeared.
The other two are still alive though and I doubt they'll ever die.

Just make sure you give them small fish. We thought the fish would have a better chance of survival if they were slightly bigger than the turtles' heads, so we bought half a dozen or so red and black mollies. We were wrong. They were easier to catch but harder to eat, so instead of gobbling them up in one gulp, they tore the poor creatures to shreds and ate the biggest chunks of fish while the rest was just left floating around in the tank. The next day our whole apartment stank of rotten fish and we had to to a full water change and tank clean.
