We saw some cool flavored cuttlebones in the bird section and gave them a try last night – the turts seemed to love vanilla, and grape, and orange cuttlebone – all were a big hit, but it kind of seemed to stain the water a little - especially the orange and grape. I'm not sure how much, or if it was just my imagination. We’re hoping it’s not harmful – we’ll probably feed it again, but only as a treat and no more than they’ll eat right away (ideally, the day before a water change). BUT, boy oh boy does our big turtle love some grape cuttlebone.

Anybody else feed this stuff?

I give only the regular cuttlebone. I don't know what specific additives are in the flavored/colored ones, but think it's better to use the more "natural" ones.

Well, I figured that the flavor/color stuff should be completely non toxic and I'm still not too worried about it - but the water quality issue is very real. My turtles loved grape cuddle bone. They hated purple tinted water.

I use the regular stuff...I'm still waiting for an easier way to prepare them (take off the hard side) though.
