Feeding and Nutrition :: What should I feed my baby Red ear sliders

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I have 3 RES about 3 months old each, and I've been feeding them chopped up fruits and vegetables. I know that they are supposed to eat fruits and vegetables but I also know that they are supposed to eat small fish and stuff like that. I don't know if guppies are to small or to big, so if anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. :D

Hi, Welcome to the Forum!

There is tons of information on the main site that you should check out. Click this: http://www.redearslider.com/index_nutrition.html

It should answer many of your questions. :)

The short answer is: Pellets.

Pellets are the staple of the diet.
I'd try lettuce early, just so you can get that in asap.
Most turtles accept pellets quickly, it's the lettuce and veggies that may be troublesome.

I personally use baby reptomin, they are like the longer sticks except not...long haha

For pellets, get Reptomin Baby (Petsmart should sell it). But give other foods as well. Look at what's good in the feeding section.

thanks they have been working so far but I didn't try the pellets because my friend said that it was bad for the turtle and could start discoloration on its shell. I just want to know if it discolors the shell.

go with the guppies along with small pellets, juveniles tend to more carnivorous and are pretty good at hunting fish even if they dont look big enough, they bite and tear

The shells will naturally change colors over time. Baby RES start off a bright green and dull to a dark green/brown after the first year or so. There is nothing you can do to stop this. Pellets should be the main staple because they contain the necessary protein that is needed, plus the vitamins and minerals. Feeding fish is only a once per month treat, as they are high in protein and can cause too fast of growth or pyramiding.
