Feeding and Nutrition :: my mom talked to the pet store "genuis"

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Thu Dec 17, 2009 7:21 pm   my mom talked to the pet store "genuis"

Well, i want 2 feed my turtles veggies but my mom said no and she asked the pet store "genuis" about feeding them veggies. He said no and said that it hurts the pH level and veggies are only for land turtles. What should i do. I want my turtles to live. They are almost one years old and range from 2.5-2.8 inches. What do i do? How do I talk my mom into feeding them veggies. She isnt even willing to look at the site. Also she belives the pet store "genuis" because the pet store has aquarium in the name and the turtles live in an aquarium. Please help!

show your mom this website. especially the nutrition pages. veggies are extremely important to nearly all types of turtles and tortoises.

If you feed a good pellet, the turtles will be fine. They're also still young, so a high protein diet is what they require. Once adults, veggies twice a week are good, but the turtle will not die if it doesn't get them.
This is the second time i read a similar post. Did you post the same thing a few weeks ago?

No pellet provides all the nutrition a turtle needs.

RES need progressively more plant matter as they age. Introducing some early, however, is good---it both adds variety to the diet and gets them used to eating plants.

You don't eat salads in your house? Assuming you do, all you need to do is give few pieces of lettuce, carrot, etc. to your turtle.

Dixie, let me guess. she spoke to roy or dewey from roy's aquarium? have you and your mom come out to the hunting Island nature center (make sure i'm working! call ahead) and i will tell your mom all you need to know about turtles. we have a yellow belly slider here, along with mud turtles and a diamond back terrapin. hearing it from a park ranger and not a store employee may help her change her mind. we're open tues-sat and i'm here every day (cept xmas and the day after) until the 8th of january.

Sorry, but most of the workers at pet stores are bone-heads! You're turtles do not get all the nutrition they need from pellets. They do need veggies or they could start pyramding. Show your mom the ages on food & nutrition on here and try to convince her.

Veggies are important, as well as, some additional calcium (minerals) from cuttlebone. For an occasional treat, I give my RES some small bits of cooked fish or shrimp.

Buy $3 worth of anacharis or cabomba or hornwort and decorate your aquarium with it. When the turtle feels in a leafy mood he'll get some on his own. As young as he is he probably won't be to interested in it anyhow.
