Feeding and Nutrition :: *accidently* WAY overfed

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

here's the scoop.

i walked into my bedroom after an exhausting day of babysitting my 2 nephews and putting them down to bed when i noticed Sam's tank looked unusual. It appeared as though one of the boys dumped half a container of 'freeze dried shimps' into his tank and walked away. i managed to scoop what i could see out of the tank and discarded the shimps into the trash.

today however Sam is not his usual self. he is very slow and lacks the energy he normaly has. i noticed the change while i was on my way to bed last night and there is no improvement this morning.

i guess what im asking is, could the large amount of shimp Sam most likely ate the cause of his lack of energy? and will he get better? i dont usually feed sam daily as he is approx 4- 5 inches. and has looked to be gettting pudgy. should i continue his 'every second day' diet plan or feed him even less now? any adivce would be fantastic!

Have you ever eaten a big meal (like at Thanksgiving) and felt really full and lethargic afterward? That's probably what your turtle feels like. Since his metabolsm is so much slower than ours, it stands to reason that it would take longer to be feeling more normal again.

I'd give some sort of leafy green (does he get any plant matter on a regular basis) and let him nibble on it if he feels like it. If he's eaten as much as you say, he could go at least a few days on a reduced diet.

I noticed when my RES has eaten 5 fish a month back and the morning he was floating around just looking at me when I came up to the tank.

We have just overfed our turtle as well and are wondering what to do! We left for our vacation this morning. Before we left, we purchased a dozen fish to put into the tank. The turtle had eaten ALL 12 before we even left the apartment! They were suppose to last him 5 days! We are wondering if we should call a pet-sitter in our area to go feed him, or if he'll be ok. I didn't know if he at a bunch of food if that would help him to wait longer for the next meal. Also, didn't know if he might get sick from this...

My turtle ate 4 guppies in a day once plus my sister fed him pellets as well, poor guy was so full but still trying to waddle after the remaining two fish...
