So I have had my little guy for only 4-5 months and when I set up his "new" home (after discovering that the "home" my neice had him in before was woefully inadequate), I threw in about 6 little neon tetras that I had left in a fish tank that I was wanting to get rid of anyway. It took a few weeks before my little res figured out what to do with them but then they slowly began disappearing. It got down to only 2 left in the tank with him and then I bought 6 ruby red feeders and threw them in. Over the course of a week or two, they too, slowly disappeared, but the two tetras still remained. In the mean time I have been giving him a variety of other foods including red leaf lettuce, carrot, a frozen veggie based turtle food (occasionally), dried pellets, chunks of cuttle bone, and occasional dried krill. Our local pet store had been out of feeder guppies for about 3 weeks and just got some in yesterday. I figured since he STILL has the two tetras in his tank he surely wasn't all that hungry. I bought 10 ruby red feeders and tossed them in the tank. Within 20 minutes, ALL TEN were GONE!!! It was a minnow carnage FEST! I seriously could not believe how fast he gulped them all down. I was actually worried that he was going to choke as he was catching them when he still had the tail of the previous one sticking out of his mouth. Yet, this morning, the two tetras are still there! Wierd. Not sure why he ignores them??? So what do you all suggest? Based on the slow eating of the tetras and the last small group of feeders, I never expected him to go all gorging crazy on me last night. I figured I would throw in 10 fish and they would slowly disappear over a few weeks. Holy COW! I really do not want to have to maintain yet another container for minnows. But it can't be good for him to eat that many in one evening either. Thoughts?
