Feeding and Nutrition :: What does duckweed look like?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I live in the California Delta and we have Water Hiacynth (sp?) all over our sloughs, etc. It's actually quite the pesky weed and taking over some marinas. My turtle is very little and our local WH are huge, complete with flowers, tubers, etc. Guess I'd have to chop it up a bit. Yes?

I think we also have duckweed but people I've asked around here give me different descriptions of what it looks like.

Is it tiny, little round light green flat circle leaves that float in numbers so numerous that from far away it looks like algae?? But once you get close and pick up a handful you see it's actually a bunch of tiny flat, floating leaves? True??

I guess I could Google "duckweed"... duh. But I'd probably get a million hits of different descriptions, so since I'm here, I thought I'd ask specifically in regard to turtles.

Thanks.

Yes, what you described is duckweed :)
Here's a pretty good close-up pic of duckweed:

And here's a far-away pic of duckweed. But not the thing with the beak... That's a duck. :P
