Feeding and Nutrition :: anybody else have a lot of floating lettuce bits?

hey guys

i always keep a fresh piece of green leaf lettuce attached to a veggie clip in my two turtles' tank.

i noticed they seem to make a lot of mess. tiny bits of lettuce EVERYWHERE.

bad part is the pieces float so my filter cant get to it.

anybody else have this problem and did you find solutions?

thanks for your time!


btw, i thought about feeding them in a separate tank but the turtles eat the lettuce verry casually. it usually takes them a whole or two days to finish their portion.

i tell my turtle "eat your veggies wall-e!"

and eventually all the little pieces get eaten and i can give him a new piece

Yeah, mine tear the lettuce in a million tiny pieces before they decide that it's okay to eat it.

So this may seem silly, but I have always hand fed Sheldon his food. He loves to eat pellets from my hand, even if I throw a few in the water he wouldn't eat them, just keep begging for me to give him more by hand. So I always just assumed he didn't like to eat veggies because he wouldn't react to them when I tried it by hand. I tried to feed him some carrot once and he started fluttering at it! Lol

I put some lettuce clipped in the water after I saw your post and he ate it all in like 5 minutes! How awesome, I can't believe I hadn't thought of that.

So thanks for that post! Sheldon will now have a much healthier diet thanks to you

lol theyre attacking them because they think its food.

try sticking a piece of shrimp or something in your fingers. theyll come up and eat it. (instead of your fingers)

i make mine follow the food up o the basking spot and then give them it. theyll dive right back in the water to eat it and come back for the next piece.

I'll just try that with my regular pellet food instead of the shrimp. I hear it's bad for the turtles.

howxprofound, shrimp isnt bad for tutrles...river shrimp or gamouris as its more comonly know is perfectly fine. its widley used in turtle food mixes.
