Feeding and Nutrition :: Pellets vs. Protein, what do you give your turtle?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Okay, I have two turtle tanks. One tank houses two 5 inch RES, and the other houses one 8 inch RES. My 8 inch turtle, Sadie, has a dramatically different diet from the two 5 inch turtles, Hurricane and Typhoon.

Everyday, Sadie gets one or two live jumbo mealworms (sometimes called "megaworms") plus varying amounts of dried krill and shrimp. She absolutely hates lettuce, blueberries, strawberries, carrots, and anything not protein related so we give her tons of cuttlebone. We've done this for quite a few months now, and, she has no pyramiding of any kind. (There was some she got with her previous owner, and it has not increased at all).

Now, Hurricane and Typhoon have a diet which is primarily pellet based with the occasional protein snack. We have tried Reptomin, Rep-Cal, Flukers, some sort of cutesy ultra healthy pellet blend, and some cheap stuff, and, all of those foods have given them pyramiding. I have reduced them to 3 pellets each, and I hand feed them to make sure they get the same amount. But they still get pyramiding. And they also get plenty of cuttlebone. I have a working heat source, it's definitely warm enough for them to metabolize everything because they shedding normally. I'd feed them every other day but the problem is, they both get the same amount of food and both are having the same problems.

So, I'm just curious, I know that a lot of you hear discourage protein based diets. When I had Hurricane and Typhoon on a shrimp and krill diet when they were little, they never got pyramiding. This started after we started the pellets. I want to know if anyone else here gives their turtles protein mostly, and if those turtles have pyramiding or not. And I want to know how people's turtle's are doing with their pyramiding in relation to the pellets.

It's frustrating because I have tons of pellets right now that I spent all this money on because I thought they would be good for all of my turtles, and I am starting to think that they aren't.

Can you post pictures of the shell? It might not be severe or could even just be retained scutes.

I've never had pyramiding with any of my turtles, but sometimes they will retain a scute longer than "natural" before it comes off. I've used reptomin baby, reptomin, wardley and now HBH. HBH has the best nutrient content out of those. I supplement with cuttlebone but I also give occasional high protein snacks; salmon, tuna, and those frozen shrimp cubes. Plus a guppy or minnow every now and then. I have the habit of giving a bit over the reccomended amount of protein but it hasn't caused any problems yet.

Are they basking okay?

They are basking and shedding normally. They bask a few hours every day and have the right UVB and heat sources. They have had a bit of a growth spurt recently, but, they are shedding their scutes almost as fast as the pyramiding is showing up, so, I'd expect it to lessen, not increase :\

Spike, I'd like to try that HBH, where did you get it?

I found them in regular aquarium stores.

Pellets are fairly high in protein (some more than others). A diet based on pellets IS a protein diet.

I've got pellets that are low in protein, and high in calcium and D3, and they still got fat off of those...

I give my RES frozen shrimp maybe once a week, if not every other. Then on a occasion, I buy her rosy minnows to hunt. My vet told me that you should be feeding a turtle live prey once a week, that live prey being fish. I supplement her diet with pellets from ZooMed that are for maintenance, not for growth. They are low in protein, and have all the nutrients she needs. I also use repti-safe from zoo med that purifies the water, and adds calcium. I have never had any pyramiding. She's 9 years old, and I have had her since she was a wee hatchling. She no longer eats veggies, she actually gives me the stink eye when I try to drop some in. When she was younger, she was huge into fruits and veggies, but now all she wants is meat. My vet assured me that this was normal, all RES are different. Just as long as her diet keeps her healthy and gets what she needs.

laurenation, try using a veggie clip - it'll hold the lettuce in place in the tank.
