Feeding and Nutrition :: Rolly Pollies(Piggly Wiggly)

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Thu Jun 02, 2011 12:29 pm   Rolly Pollies(Piggly Wiggly)

Hi, I was just wondering whether or not its okay or normal for my RES to continue eating these or if its even safe. She's two now about 2 1/2-3" and lives mainly outdoors. She lives in my backyard, but has a tank to live in and stuff. Sometimes the little armadillo-like bugs fall into her tank and she just eats them, before I can pick them out(I leave the lid off during the day so she can get her water warmed, since its hot here). Thanks. :)
(P.s I would show a picture, but I no longer have a Pc, so I'm using my phone, sorry  )

IDK about eating pill bugs but I'm very confused about your setup.

How big is the tank, can she can out of the water?

Sorry about the confusion. Its a 60 Gallon tank w/ a heater, that is right on the porch in my back yard. I take her out during the day so she can run about, cause she seems to like being out more,so no she can't get out when she wants:( . There aren't many predators around so she's fine when she's out.

It's probably not harmful, but you probably don't want her eating them.

You probably don't want a heater outside, it could malfunction.

You probably also want to add a Basking Dock.

@Steve-Oh okay. Thanks Steve:) I was wondering, cause she's only ever really had Carrots, pellets and shrimp up until this point. I know She's omnivorous, but this is her first time eating a bug, and its not a bug she would normally come across(atleast not here where I live). :?

@Linus- The heater is only turned on at night, cause it gets a bit chilly at night. I have a basking dock, and she uses it a lot, but she seems to prefer being out of the tank more often. She only goes in when its raining or at night(or if I'm away from the house for a long time). Thanks for the advice though:)

Is the tank exposed to direct sunlight? What kind of protection does it have?

The thing with heaters, is that rapid temperature changes is what makes them screw up...for instance, outside temperatures.

@Steve- Mostly, as the sun moves. From 11am-2pm the tank is partially in the sun and from 3pm-5pm the sun is full out and hits the whole tank with minimal shade from the dock and rocks at the bottom. After 5 the temperature drops and the sun starts to set(finally going down at around 7-ish).

@Linus- I didn't realize this, I've had it for about a year now(I got it when I got Sora) and it hasn't really acted funny. But I'll take this into consideration. Thanks :)

^^Not exactly...I know here in Cali we have a bug that is def. in the same genus, but Can't roll up and is larger. We call those Wood Louse. But I guess the whole group could be called wood louse.
