This is a good place for the question.

What size tank do you have? Do you already have light fixtures or are you planning to buy them too?

I understand a repti glo compact fluorescent is an acceptable bulb. You'd need a 5.0 or an 8.0 with a good clamp fixture. You would, of course, also need something for heat. A regular household incandescent - maybe 75 watt - would be suitable if adjusted to the correct distance from the basking area.

An alternative for a tank your size would be a mercury vapor bulb. A MVB is an all in one type providing both heat and UVB. A good type is a T Rex 100 watt flood light. You'd have to have a good fixture with a ceramic base because these bulbs get very hot. They are more expensive but they last longer (about a year as opposed to six months for a compact fluorescent) so in the long run I think they cost about the same.

If you have a 50-gallon tank, I'd recommend the mercury vapor bulb. It would provide UVB and UVA rays as well as heat (does everything) and eliminates some of the wires you'd have using 2 bulbs. Go to a place like Home Depot or Lowes and get a brooder lamp that has a ceramic base and is rated for about 250 watts. If you don't want to make one, buy a lampstand (Zoo-Med is one company that makes them) to hang the light from (these lights should be hung vertically).

You can buy MVB bulbs much more cheaply on-line than at a petstore.
