would a 100 watt suffice for a 12 gallon tank by meaning it wont overheat

Its a waste of money, just use a regular household bulb. And yes I think a 100 wat would overheat a 12 gallon tank.

You need to check the temp with a thermometer to see if it's in a good range (88-90F) and if too warm either use a lower wattage bulb or move the bulb farther away from the basking area to get it in that range.

To me a 100-watt bulb in a 12 gallon tank sounds too strong, especially if it's a spot bulb. Again, you need to check the temp. Put a thermometer on the basking area (placing the thermometer on an object the height of your turtle would be more accurate) and leave it there for about 20 minutes before checking it.

A regular lightbulb for warmth works just as well and is cheaper. Your turtle also needs a UVB light.

When i was buying stuff for my turtle and i needed to get regular bulb from the cabinet. I went there and opened the cabinet. And looked for bulbs. And to my surprise i saw this Zoo-med Basking Bulb. I was like, "were the hell did this some from". Then i remember, in my 7th grade project i soemthing with UVA rays and got this bulb

Well anyways, I think your is too stong for a 12 G
I use a 75 W and i still have to keep it pretty far away to get the temperature right

I know everyone says to use a regular household bulb but our bulbs burn out in about a month and I have had a "heat bulb" since May and it is still going strong. Also I think a 100 watt wuld be too hot. I would try a 60 first and if that doesn't make it warm enough (it should since you have to have a UVB as well) then up it to maybe a 75. I have a 60 watt for heat plus the UVB and that (depending on the house temperature) will make it between 86 and 95 degrees.
