It has been super cold here this past week and today when I got up and turned on the lights the thermometer said the water was 71 degrees!! I am thinking of either getting some really small and really safe water heater or a black heat bulb. I am just really nervous about the water heaters since I have heard about them exploding or getting super hot. Do you guys think that a black heat bulb would warm the water enough?

Submersible heaters are the best option because they keep a constant temperature. It's important to keep them submerged when they're on because if they aren't in the water they can overheat, but that's a very small and easily avoided risk. Most people on here use the stealth heater, and give it rave reviews.

Isn't that one too big? Or do they come in different sizes? I just need something really small.

They come in different sizes for tanks as small as 10 gallons, so you should be able to find the right wattage for your tank. They have charts on the side of the boxes to help you pick the right one.
How large is your tank?
