how often do you clean your filter and change out the carbon? also, how do you clean the biological filtration media? i know you cant use normal tap water to do it.

I rinse the biomedia in a pail of tank water I've taken out before I start to clean. Most carbon packs say to replace it monthly, some, like the internal Fluvals, say more frequently. It should tell you on the box the carbon came in.

What kind of filter do you have? For me, the length of time between cleanings depends in part on the filter being used.

Well, at some point you're going to have to replace the carbon. You could call the mfgr and ask what the recommended amount of time is for replacing the carbon or, if you have a petstore near you that sells the filter you have, the store should also sell the media for it. You could go and look at the carbon and see what it says on the box.
