How close can I put this brand light to the basking spot?

I wouldn't put any UVB closer than 12".

What kind of light is it (tube or compact flourescent)? Some lights are Ok 6-8 inches from a basking turtle. Some are good a little farther away, especially if they're new. Mercury vapor bulbs need to be a minimum of 12 inches away. The amount of UVB rays that reach a turtle drops dramatically the further away the light is from the basking area.

It is a compact.

If it's effective up to 12 inches, at 12 inches the turtle wouldn't be getting much UVB. Personally, if it's a 5.0, I'd have it a few inches closer than 12 inches. Make sure the UVB light is balanced out with the heat light. If it appears that it's bothering your turtle's eyes, then move it back to 12 inches.
