I think it would depend to some extent on where you have the filter positioned under the tank (to one side, in the middle) and where you place the input and output tubes. I know with the XP3 somewhere in the booklet for setting it up it explained how much to cut off, and it should tell you in the book that came with the XP2 that as well.

You want to put the filter where it's going to stay and position the input and outputs where you want them, and cut each section so that it's just a little longer than it needs to be. You don't want the tubing to be stretched tight, but you also don't want any big dips or loops in it.

Yes, it said to do the same thing for the XP3. There are some pictures in the manual showing you possible ways to position the filter, yes?

Octpusgirl, what would be the peoblem with large dips?I ask because with one of my setups I didnt cut off any of the tubing. It seems to be working okay though. Will the moter have to work harder to pull the water in?

I think that's the idea. It probably would still run fine, i'd just be worried that it would maybe wear it out faster. And myrltetheturtle- yeah it can be a little tricky, i used a tiny bit of vaseline on them and they slid right on.

the longest part of the setup is what you just asked,, getting the tubing over the plastic,, but its better that way so you knwo whte tubing is on the plastic real secure and wont leak water.

You can also stick the ends of the tubing in warm water so they're more flexible and will stretch over the pieces more easily. They're still a tight fit, though.

If there's a really large dip, the motor has to work harder to pull the water up into the canister.

When I bought the filter, the Rena rep said they didn't have to get them quite as far on as it says to. An inch sounds OK to me, especially since you're using the clips. As long as it doesn't leak...
