I recently just bought a 75 gal and stand off of craigslist. Now I'm looking for a filter and am really leaning towards the xp3. The only problem is that it's pretty big and I don't think will fit under the stand. Would the filter work the same if it wasn't directly underneath the tank but to the side? And what problems would arise from it if I did go that route?

The XP3 is about 15" tall and it should fit, or still run fine with a tank on a stand. A few people even run it when their tank is on the floor. The main drawback is that it's harder to prime this way. It's also a bit more stressful on the filter too but I don't imagine this to be a problem in your case.

Good to know! The tank will still be on the stand but the stand has this little shelf welded onto it so I know it won't fit. But I figured if it's still a good foot or two below the tank it'd still work just as good. Just double checking before I make the huge jump on buying a filter! Thanks Steve (:

Good to hear! It can also be easily kept to the side of the tank if it won't fit underneath it. It's a good filter, it's been reliable to me all these years.
