Wipe on some white vinegar and follow up with a razor blade to scrap off the hard water scale.

In VeipaCray's filter recommendation, the blue pad is not being used as a polishing pad, it is being used as a medium mechanical filter. This is to remove any medium sized debris that makes it past the coarse sponges. This keeps the water column that is going through the bio-media clean and not cause a last stage restriction in the flow of water. (the bottom of the baskets is where the impeller is that pumps the water out)
