That's an expensive route. You'd need a special filter or an attachment. I'd go with a pair of VisiTherm Stealth heaters, they're inexpensive and should last a few years.

Hydor sells In-line heaters (200-watts and 300-watts) that are attached to the output hose of the filter (you have to cut the hose to attach it). I've seem them sold on several sites, one of which is www.bigalsonline.com I've read of users liking them.

How can you tell if you should be concerned about something like that.

You want to worry about it when you have a bigger tank and you aren't putting on a supported floor. Generally (unless the floor is reinforced like for a bathtub) normal second floors cannot support 100 gallon tanks. It's always good to ask instead of coming home and waving to your downstairs neighbors while they swim in what used to be your tank.

I'm getting a little worried.

I live on the first floor of a Garden Apartment in NY that was built many decades ago (well built brick etc..). There is a crawl space basement where there is plumbing etc.... below me. I do not know how well it is supported, but I have a lot of furniture etc... that is quite heavy without a problem. I'm going to get a 75 gallon tank that I'm probably going to fill about 1/2 way. It will be on a plain metal stand that will also have a 20 gallon tank on it (lower level of stand).

I wonder if I'm in danger.

How much does a 75 gallon tank 1/2 full weigh?

You can try bouncing up and down on the middle of the floor where you want the tank to go and see if the floor sags or bounces or gives at all. If it feels solid then you should be fine.

Is the gap with the stand, the tank or both? Can you take a level or hard edge to find out?

That tank looks great, BTW. So many possibilities. :)
